I was one of the first carpet repair/re-stretch companies with a website in Calgary and there wasn’t much for images on-line of rippled carpet and the like. So I had to make my own content. There is one image I am quite proud of as it illustrates a really nice repair. Here it is:

You may recognize it from my main front page image. I decided one day to do a Google image search, to see if anyone has decided to borrow (ok steal is the right word) my image. To my amazement it had been used by 18 other websites! I was kind of flattered and kind of mad. My favorite was the Mississauga carpet store that will remain nameless that actually put their logos on my picture for their ads! I did email them and ask them to take down the image and they obliged. They were actually cool about it so I don’t want to make a big deal about it.

I decided, I’m not going to worry about all the other companies borrowing my images. Life is too short to get upset. But I can tell you, I must be doing something right if people are putting their name on my work! I’ll say it again… Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

It’s great to see the resilience of the people of Calgary. One thing to be certain is we have seen a lot of changes in this great city of ours. With the economic boom and the not-so-booming, it’s been a long road!

The typical question, how much does it cost to fix my carpet?

People often assume repairing carpet is like buying any other product. But the reality is all repairs are not equal.  This is because the level of  re-stretching and repair experience can be vastly different.  We are the best value in the industry.  We have premium service not premium pricing.  So what are the reasons for the price differences between us and our competitors?

The main reasons are:

1. We use a power stretcher for our repairs, this is more time consuming, but a vastly superior repair. (not the painful ineffective knee kickers)
2. We provide warranty on all of work.  You can be confident your carpet will be fixed now and the repair will last.
3. We move the required furniture.
4. We fix the job properly to the highest possible standard.  Unfortunately not everyone repairs the carpet properly.
5. We have the most experience out of anyone in repairing carpets- literally more than 2500 repairs in the last 5 years.

Here is a simple tip to help extend the life of your carpet.

We always recommend after getting your carpet stretched you should get it cleaned. If this is the first steam clean it will usually come out amazing!

Well why is this?

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to clean a new carpet? That’s likely because your carpet has a stain guard of some type on it.  Most people don’t realize that the first steam cleaning is basically removing  the stains and the stain guard.  The stain guard is doing exactly what it is designed to do. It’s preventing stains from entering the fabric and sacrificing itself in order to save your carpet.

Most people are unaware that you can reapply this stain guard. Most carpet cleaning companies supply this service and we highly recommend it.  Doing your high traffic areas is a great idea.

Not surprisingly to DIY’ers you can do it yourself.  Admittedly you may not be as good as the factory or a trained cleaner who’s done it a thousand times but you can get a good result for very little money and a little bit of effort.

We recommend Scotchgard Protector in a can.  It’s available at many retailers like Home Depot.

Remember to always stretch your carpets first and then get them steam cleaned… and for all the overachievers who believe a pinch of prevention is worth a pound of cure…. break out the Scotchgard and overachieve like crazy!

What is the most environmentally friendly carpet available? How about the one you already own.  The reality is such that if your carpet has some ripples, it likely does not need to be replaced but rather simply repaired.  Why send it to the landfill when you can get the use out of the carpet you’ve already paid for.  Wearing out something you already own will always be the green choice.  Plus however this whole carbon tax works out, they can’t re-tax you. (Well let’s hope not! :P)

It is true, that like many things today, carpet isn’t being made quite like it used to.  In the past, people changed their carpets because they had become dated, not because they had been worn out.  But unfortunately now people are changing carpets because the wear is showing earlier.  It’s not saying that all carpets are bad, it’s simply stating that there has been a large change in the density and weights of most carpets.  They are simply being made thinner and lighter than in the past.  (Of course the price of carpets has decreased as well in this time period.)  But don’t despair, carpet will still last a long time if you take care of it.

The three keys to extending the life of your carpet are:

1. Vacuum regularly, try and get the spinning cleaning brush (aka. beater bar) on your vacuum to touch the carpet.  This will not  only help clean the carpet better, but it will also prevent carpet from laying down in the main traffic area.

2.Steam clean, not too much, but when necessary.  Don’t clean it simply as a yearly or an annual thing. Clean it when it looks like a clean will make a difference, when the main traffic areas are starting to show wear.  Please don’t go with the cheapest deal you find.  Get a better cleaner, less often.

3.Wear socks or slippers.  The oil from bare feet will prematurely wear carpet.  Listen, if you love bare feet than by all means live the lifestyle you want, but just be aware, your carpet will probably not like it.

 

 

 

People are often concerned if they fix their carpet now, how long will the repair last?  The simple answer is a long time, you shouldn’t actually have to re-stretch your carpet in the first place.  Calgary Carpet Restretch is proud to back all of their re-stretching with a 3 year limited warranty.

There is a great physical change in the carpet when we stretch it. Often times we are able to trim all the way from one up to six inches of extra carpet depending on how it behaves. This means we are not simply moving the ripples to another spot in the room, but we are giving the carpet an extremely thorough stretch.  When we are stretching the carpet, we can feel the tension on the power stretcher.  The tension tells us exactly how tight or loose the carpet is.  Simply stated if the carpet is still loose, we keep stretching it until it is under extreme tension.

We like transparency, so why do we say limited warranty? Because unfortunately we can’t warranty everything. Due to being an extreme traffic area, we cannot warranty re-stretched stairs.  As well we reserve the right to void warranty in the cases of inadequate carpet maintenance, defective products or moisture damage.

You can be confident when your carpet is repaired it will done properly and will last for many years.
